As of this morning, October 31st, 2023, I have left my publisher. This was not a decision made lightly, especially in the early days of my debut novel, Janis and the Reaper, being out in the world. I am, however, excited for the new possibilities this affords me.
My decision to leave was because of many, many reasons that were both company-wide and specific to me and my work. I know—not only in my heart, but also through a basic understanding of business practices—that the way this company is being run is unethical and unsustainable. This led to a negative shift in company culture, services not up to par with industry standards, and a lack of timely communication and supportive guidance.
Ultimately, these business decisions only benefit those at the very top. The changes in the company happened so gradually, I didn't know they were occurring. I am disheartened and saddened by this, and frankly there are many other issues I would prefer to keep private. In either case, all ties have been severed and Janis and the Reaper is currently going through a rebrand.
A note about my blog post defending hybrid publishers
I believe the hybrid model can still work, truly I do. Everything I wrote in my previous blog post still stands in my mind, except for the part about my former publisher. There are some hybrids out there that function well and appropriately and are currently championing their authors. However, as of this posting, I am no long endorsing my original publisher.
So, what's next?
That's a great question. As of today, Janis and the Reaper has been pulled from distribution and is no longer available for purchase. I am going through the manuscript, cleaning up the text, reformatting, and coming out with the book in the original way I intended: through self-publishing.
If you're already signed up for my newsletter, great! You'll be kept informed of any and all updates. If not, go ahead and sign up, I'd love to have you! For now, I am working hard on making edits and getting my novel ready for re-release.
Thank you so much for reading, I really appreciate everyone's patience and support.
I know it's heartbreaking, but I'm so proud of you and so happy to support you in the next phase of your authorial career!
